About The School

School's History

Halcyon Elementary School opened its doors for the first time on August 28, 2000. This is our sixteenth year and a lot of work has gone into making our school as great as it is. There are still a lot of ongoing projects here at Halcyon. Construction was completed on an addition to our school March 2002. The addition included 7 new classrooms and 2 new bathrooms. Our playground is open and enjoying use daily. ALFA Development and Jim Wilson donated the land to Montgomery Public Schools which became Halcyon's playground. The land will become a Montgomery County public park and will be maintained by the Parks and Recreation Department. We raised (through donations and other sources) funds to provide the playground equipment. A generous donation from the Sonic Automotive Group made it all happen.

Each year Halcyon students in Grades 3-6 performed scored higher than the State average on every grade level. It enjoys a "Clear" academic status. Its attendance rate was higher than that of the System or State. Though very pleased with this the school staff set goals to reach greater heights in the each year.

Halcyon experience growth from approximately 740 in its first year to about 965 students in its third year. The faculty increased from 42 to 59 teachers. We have become a more international school community with the addition of many international students. In 2003, the school population decreased with the opening of a new school built for the expanding population in the eastern section of the county. 2004 found our school beginning with approximately 650 students. 2005 ended with 669 students. The 2006-07 school year ended with 725 students and 42 teachers. The 2007-2008 school year ended with 714 students and 35 teachers. The 2008-2009 school year ended with 654 students and 36 teachers. The 2014-2015 school year ended with 652 students. The 2015-2016 year ended with 472 students.

During the 2004-2005 school year Halcyon Elementary earned Renaissance Master School Certification in Reading. In the 2005-06 and 2006-2007 school years Halcyon once again was certified as a Renaissance Master School. In 2004-05 and 2005-06 the Media Center received awards for highest circulation in the Montgomery Public Schools District

In 2011-2012 we were named “Character Education School of the Month” by the Character at Heart Program, along with winning the Energy Star School Award. We won 1st place in the PBS Bulletin Board Competition for improved behavior. Like our school, our history is still under development.

In 2015-2016 we received a grant from the Poarch Creek Indians allowing us to upgrade our cameras and add 72 computers to the school.

This school year we have welcomed a new principal, Shannon Schmidt and 8 new teachers. Our theme this year is "S.T.E.P.S.", Students, Teachers, Encouraging, Participating, Supporting. We have already received a grant from Senator Dick Brewbaker for our Second Grade Teachers. This year looks to be great!
